February is known as the month of love. It is a month dedicated to love and everything that love is to people. The 14th of February is a special day by all standards and some who do not have someone to share it with usually get determined to find love to share the special day with.

Presents and cards exchanged over romantic meals/dinners or maybe some choose dates to cinemas to see something new or some romantic film, or maybe we choose to go clubbing where obviously a VIP table with wine and little bites where couple will share a romantic dance and whisper sweet nothings. Yeah, it’s February. Valentine’s Day is upon us. A day sweethearts communicate their adoration to their loved ones.

The question is should there be a special day to celebrate love or should love be celebrated any way without focusing on just on day in a calendar year.

One of the stories about the origin of this special day is that of Valentine. He was a priest in Ancient Rome who defied the order of the then Emperor Claudius who banned all marriages and engagements because her was finding it difficult to maintain a strong army because the soldiers strong attachment to their wives and families. He continued to perform marriages to young couple in secret and when he was found out, he was ordered to be put to death and the execution was carried out on the 14th of Feb around the year 270.

It was said that while he was awaiting his execution, he became friends with his jailers daughter to whom he left a farewell note and he signed the letter “From your Valentine”. From then, the 14th became a day of exchanging love letters, poems, flowers and gifts.

Valentine’s day should not just be a day for lovers but a day to show love. Love to a friend, a neighbour, or to someone who is lonely. Yes, it is right to rekindle relationships with our spouses and lovers but it should also be about being human. February the 14th is a day widely recognised as a day made for those in romantic entanglements and this then puts pressure on couples to make the day a prefect one. Loving someone should not really be dedicated to a day on the calendar. Loving someone should be continuous and unwavering.
